Why Most Business Owners Don’t Know What Works Online
Spend time with the average business owner or executive and you’ll learn that most of them are excited about the opportunities associated with digital marketing but aren’t too sure about the execution. In other words, they know they want to participate, but might not have the knowledge or experience needed to find success on Google, Facebook, or YouTube (as examples).
At first glance, it might seem as if complexity is the issue. There are just so many things to keep on top of in the digital space that it can seem impossible for an otherwise busy person to keep up. That’s probably part of the problem, but in our experience most are missing out on a couple of more fundamental ideas.
In particular, they are making two mistakes again and again:
First, they aren’t trying new things. They’re simply sticking to what they’ve seen others do in the past, or the methods they are most comfortable with.
And second, they aren’t tracking the results of their campaigns. So, they can’t say whether leads or sales are being generated from online activities or not.
If you’re making these errors you aren’t alone. However, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t correct them right away. You should always be looking for new ways to reach customers cost-effectively. And, you absolutely have to be tracking the results of your campaigns (whether it’s through cookies, coupons, or specific offers) so you know what is and isn’t working for you.
